£500,000 is not a universal answer
This illustrative couple retires around 60 with £500,000 split across pensions, ISA and cash. It uses Costa Blanca spending of £2,365, a healthcare allowance, £10,000 relocation cost and State Pension from 67.
Currency sensitivity
The model stresses overseas spending only. GBP pensions and assets are not converted or forecast.
| Scenario | Effective spending | First shortfall | Assets at 95 |
|---|---|---|---|
| GBP 10% stronger | £2,150/month | No shortfall by age 95 | £600,112 |
| Stored rate | £2,365/month | No shortfall by age 95 | £433,879 |
| GBP 10% weaker | £2,628/month | No shortfall by age 95 | £227,471 |
This is stress testing, not a currency forecast.
Why another £500k household could differ
A single person retiring near State Pension age may need a shorter bridge. A couple retiring earlier, spending more, or holding most assets in inaccessible pensions may face a tighter projection. ISA tax-free treatment may not carry into Spain.
What the Spain model covers
State Pension uprating, destination spending, editable healthcare and relocation allowances, and deterministic FX sensitivity are modelled. FX sensitivity is stress testing, not a currency forecast. The UK–Spain treaty framework is recorded for State Pension and ordinary private or occupational pensions.
Tax, healthcare and residency limitations
Spanish personal income tax is not calculated. Flexible DC withdrawals, lump sums, government-service pensions, investments, UK property and individual treaty relief require individual analysis. Spain may not recognise ISA tax-free treatment.
S1 eligibility and public healthcare registration are not guaranteed. Residency qualification, legal status and property purchase are outside the calculator. This is general modelling, not tax, legal, immigration, investment or healthcare advice.
Explore places, then model the finances
Costs and daily life vary substantially between Costa Blanca, South Tenerife and other parts of Spain. RetirementInSight models the financial consequences; WhereCanIRetire helps answer where in Spain may suit you.
